Ruto-Raila Merger: What You Need to Know About Kenya’s New Political Alliance

In a landmark development on March 7, 2025, President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga officially signed a political pact at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), signaling their commitment to work together within a unified government.

The agreement between Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) aims to foster national unity and stability. Homa Bay Governor and ODM National Chairperson, Gladys Wanga, praised the partnership, emphasizing its significance in prioritizing national interests over individual ambitions. She highlighted that this unity is for all Kenyans, especially the youth, women, and marginalized communities.

Similarly, Embu Governor and UDA Chairperson, Cecily Mbarire, lauded the transparency of the process and the openness of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). She expressed satisfaction that the agreement was reached through thorough consultations within party structures and was made public, ensuring that all Kenyans are aware of its contents. Mbarire commended both leaders for setting aside their differences for the nation’s betterment.

This merger represents a significant shift in Kenya’s political landscape, with both leaders advocating for a collaborative approach to governance. The alliance is expected to influence future political dynamics, particularly as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.

As the nation absorbs this development, many anticipate positive outcomes from the Ruto-Raila partnership, hoping it will usher in an era of inclusivity, equitable development, and strengthened democratic institutions.
